Description
Apple created AIF in 1988, based on EA’s Interchange File Format. The AIF file type is mostly used in the macOS and iOS operating systems and in iTunes. Technical details
According to the published specifications, AIF format files store raw uncompressed audio, which takes a lot of storage space. A standard AIF file has a sampling rate of 44.1KHz and a bit depth of 16 bits. Structurally, AIFs are divided into chunks. Each chunk stores a different type of information: the actual audio data necessary for playback, the track name, metadata, etc.
