OBS Studio is a free alternative to Bandicam with downloads for Mac, Windows, and Linux computers. OBS, which stands for Open Broadcaster Studio, is popular with podcasters and streamers because it’s free, open-source software with video-recording and live-streaming capabilities.
Key features:
Pros:
Highly customizable
Free with no watermark
Cons:
Has a steep learning curve
Enabling computer microphone connectivity can be a challenge
QuickTime Player
Best for: taking simple screen recordings for free on a Mac or PC
OS: macOS, Windows
TopSevenReviews rating: 4.5 out of 5
QuickTime Player is the built-in Mac alternative to Bandicam, included with all current macOS devices. If you’re interested in the Bandicam screen recorder for a Mac because you want to create simple, quick screen recordings without a lot of frills and features, you might not even have to download a new program. With that said, QuickTime is primarily a media player. It has some very basic screen-recording and editing capabilities, but it doesn’t do a whole lot beyond recording video and audio clips.
Key features:
Pros:
Makes screen recording quick and easy
Free with no watermark
Can play video files after recording
Cons:
Lacks advanced editing features
No live drawing or annotation capabilities
Limited screen-recording options
Best for: capturing recordings from multiple devices at once
OS: macOS
G2 rating: 4.5 out of 5, 54 reviews
ScreenFlow is another screen recorder for a Mac. It’s a pretty simple application, with some perks like light and dark modes and basic video-editing tools. This program is a little confusing to us, not because it’s hard to use (it’s actually really easy), but because of some of the choices the developers made with its features. For example, it lacks a lot of advanced editing tools, but it does include a reverse-video effect and a library of video templates. Basically, there’s not a lot of customization, but if you like ScreenFlow’s templates, you might enjoy using it.
Key features:
Pros:
Easy-to-learn interface
Quick and simple screen recordings
Capture more recordings with multi-device capture capabilities
Cons:
Video-editing tools are extremely basic
Limited publishing and export options
Best for: recording quick video messages
OS: macOS, Windows, iOS, Android
Capterra rating: 4.1 out of 5, 15 reviews
ApowerREC is a paid screen-recording program with a free trial version. The free version is extremely limited, and might not give you a good idea of what you’ll be paying for with the full version. With that said, the full version includes a lot of the features that you’ll find with other Mac-compatible screen recorders, like capturing your webcam feed and adding annotations. However, while this program is fairly robust, some users report problems with customer support. Before you pay for a lifetime, annual, or monthly license, consider what you’ll do if you run into issues with playback or exporting your videos.
Key features:
Pros:
Claim your work by adding your watermark in ApowerREC
Capture quick video messages, with or without screen recording
Offers a mobile-friendly version for iOS or Android
Cons:
Customer support may be unresponsive
Glitches have been reported with the playback functionality
Best for: annotating screen recordings
OS: macOS, Windows
AceThinker Aqua Demo is another option if you’re trying to figure out how to get Bandicam for a Mac. Like some of the other programs we tried, AceThinker is paid software that offers decent customer support and a good customer experience. While it includes features like annotations and live screenshots, it’s also expensive compared with similar programs with the same features (or better).
Key features:
Pros:
Easy gameplay recording
Quick video enhancements with annotations
Cons:
Expensive compared with other screen recorders
Some users are reporting poor customer service experiences
Best for: sending quick video messages
OS: any with compatible browser
G2 rating: 4.3 out of 5, 80 reviews
ScreenPal, formerly known as Screencast-O-Matic, is an online tool for recording and editing videos of your screen and/or webcam footage. ScreenPal is a browser-based application, which means you don’t have to download anything to get started. It also includes both screen-recording and editing functionalities. With that in mind, ScreenPlay’s screen recorder and editor are separate applications. So, it’s not quite as convenient as you might think. Essentially, you’ll have to record your screen, download your recording, and then upload it to ScreenPal’s editor to finish your project. That’s a bit clunky, if you ask us.
Key features:
Pros:
Free screen recording and editing with no download
High-quality video exports
Cons:
Separate recording and editing online applications create inconvenient workflows
Watermark on videos with the free subscription
Issues with garbled audio on exported recordings
How to use Bandicam on a Mac: Recording with an alternative
As disappointing as it is that Bandicam doesn’t have a Mac version, you don’t have to buy a PC and completely change everything about how you work to record your screen, grab webcam footage, and create cool presentations, gameplay clips, or video messages. Instead, follow these simple steps with Movavi Screen Recorder, our favorite Bandicam alternative:
Step 1. Install and launch Movavi Screen Recorder
Download the installation file. Once you complete the download, follow the installation instructions and launch the program on your computer. After the installation is complete, launch the screen-recording program.
Step 2. Get ready to record your screen
Before you start recording, make sure that you’re ready to go. If you’re going to record from your webcam, make sure that it’s on and uncovered. If you want to record your whole screen, check that you don’t have any unwanted tabs or windows open and showing. If you’re going to record a specific window or tab, navigate to it and make sure that it’s loaded and ready to go.
Step 3. Customize your recording parameters
If you haven’t already, go ahead and launch Movavi Screen Recorder. On the program’s toolbar, click on the Screen recording icon. If you click and drag your mouse, you’ll see an orange rectangle appear over the part of the screen you want to record.
For other customizable settings, click on the Preferences icon on the toolbar and make adjustments. Among those features, you’ll find the option to set a timer and schedule your recording. So, if you don’t want to sit and wait for a video to finish playing, or if you need to automate your recording, you can easily make those adjustments here.
Step 4. Record your screen and/or webcam
You can click on the Webcam icon to record from your webcam feed. You can also select if you want to record from your microphone or only system audio.
When you’re ready, click the REC icon (if you aren’t pre-scheduling a recording for later). While you’re recording, you can draw, annotate, and/or highlight keystrokes and cursor activity. Pause and restart the recording whenever you need to, and when you’re done, just click Stop.
Step 5. Trim and export your recorded video
When you’re done recording, you can just export and save your file in your preferred format. Or, if you need a more polished finished product, you can make edits to take your video to the next level. For example, if you want to trim the beginning and end of your video, just click the Cut icon. Select the part you want to cut out and hit the Trash can icon to delete it.
Finally, when you’re done, click the Export button to save your video in your preferred file format. From here, you can save your video wherever you want locally on your Mac by clicking the Save button. Or you can upload your recorded video directly to social media, like WhatsApp or YouTube, or the cloud.
