If you’re one of the 175 million people who use Discord regularly, you’re probably accustomed to the default font, called gg sans – perhaps even bored of it. Users have been requesting a Discord font change option for years, but have so far been out of luck, wondering how to change the Discord font using some other method. Fortunately, there are several ways to do this.

Method 1: Changing the font scaling

The simplest way to change how the Discord font appears is to change the font size and spacing. This isn’t changing the font itself. It will still be gg sans. However, even subtle changes to the font’s size and spacing can result in a markedly different appearance. Additionally, you can adjust the size and scaling to make messages easy to read. If you’re struggling to read after hours of staring at the same screen, this could be the perfect option for you.

Instructions for desktop

  1. Open the Discord application and click on the gear icon in the bottom left corner of the application window. This will open the app’s settings.
  2. You should see a list of pages on the left-hand side of the application window, under the heading App Settings. Select Appearance. It should be at the top of the list.
  3. You should now see another list of headings. Locate and select Chat Font Scaling.
  4. Here you should see three adjustment sliders. The default settings for each of the three options will be highlighted in green.

The first, Chat Font Scaling, lets you adjust the font size. Move the slider leftwards to decrease the font size and rightwards to increase the font size. Discord gives you a 12px range of font size options, from 12 to 24.

The second slider, Space Between Message Groups, lets you change the gap left between groups of messages. If you’re finding it difficult to discern between different groups of messages, try moving the slider to the right. Adjusting this slider might also help you fix incorrect spacing between messages.

The third slider, Zoom Level, lets you adjust how much you want to be zoomed into the Discord window. As the application notes, you can adjust this using your keyboard. Use Ctrl + to zoom in and Ctrl - to zoom out. Ctrl 0 resets the zoom to the default setting, 100%. Use these keyboard shortcuts to zoom into something you want to look at in closer detail, or zoom out to see a long chain of messages.

Instructions for mobile app

  1. Open the app and go to your profile by tapping the smiley face icon in the bottom toolbar.
  2. Tap on Appearance to enter the appearance menu.
  3. While you can adjust the zoom level with a slider, you won’t be able to fine-tune other options as on the desktop app. However, you can turn the Classic chat text size option on or off. Turning this option on reduces the font size slightly.

Method 2: Colorizing the font using code blocks

Discord’s default font is gg sans. But did you know it has another font? Code blocks are considered different to regular messages, and are distinguished by a different font, called Consolas. Convert your messages into code blocks to have them appear in the Consolas font instead of the usual gg sans.

  1. Type your message as usual.
  2. Add three backticks (this symbol: ` ) to the beginning and end of your message. For example: ```This message will appear in Consolas, not gg sans```
  3. Send your message.

Method 3: Changing the font style in Discord messages

If you’ve ever seen a message with fancy text, gothic lettering, letters in boxes, or something similar, know that you’ve seen an example of someone using font styles to spice up their Discord messages. This option technically doesn’t change the font from gg sans. Instead, it uses Unicode symbols to create fun new lettering. Use the fonts to highlight specific words, surprise your friends, and more.

  1. Go to your internet browser and open a font generator website. There are plenty of options. Many are free, so don’t be fooled into paying for anything!
  2. Write out your message in the provided text box.
  3. The font generator should convert your message into several font styles. Scroll through the options and choose the one you like best.
  4. Copy the generated message and paste it into Discord. The Unicode characters that the font generator site created will be pasted, giving your message a funky appearance.

Record your gameplay with Gecata by Movavi

If you’re a regular user of Discord, you’re likely a gamer. More than three-quarters of Discord users use the platform for gaming content. It's hard to stand out with roughly 19 million distinct communities within Discord.

Standing out is especially important if you want to make a name for yourself in this ever-growing community. That’s where a unique font can come in handy. Even more impressive, though, is the actual content you create. This is where Gecata by Movavi comes in.

Gecata is a powerful game-recording software that lets you do everything from saving the odd clip to full-on streaming marathons. Taking up just a couple dozen megabytes of space, you’ll barely notice this program being there.

You’ll undoubtedly notice what it produces, though. Gecata records high-quality footage of your gameplay, perfect for sharing to a Discord channel – and other social media accounts. You can also record your reactions, both visual and auditory, for maximum entertainment. Never miss the joy of a record-breaking moment, the pain of a fumbled game.

If you’re looking to livestream your content, Gecata is the perfect solution. You can set the program to automatically start recording when you boot up a game, saving you time. Hotkeys also let you control the recording settings mid-game, meaning you don’t have to mess around in settings during a crucial moment. You can overlay your webcam footage to let your viewers see your reactions in real-time. If you get too boisterous, though, don’t worry: Gecata’s two-way sound capture saves multiple audio streams separately, allowing you to edit out any embarrassing moments while leaving the audio from the game unaffected.

So, you’ve perfected your content creation game with Gecata. Now it’s time to share that content with your fans in Discord.

Summary

Until Discord adds an option for custom fonts, users will have to stick with these options when they want to adjust the appearance of the messages they read daily. Still, you can achieve quite a lot with these three workarounds. Play around with them and see what you can do!
